How to Look After Your Blu Ray Disks

Ways to repair and look after your blu ray disks
Blu ray disks are very fragile by nature, some people say that they are even more fragile than DVD's. This is why looking after your disks is a must, as they can be very expensive (Some recent releases can go up to £25!). They are an investment, and if looked after properly, they can last years and years. I'm sure we've all had those moments when we pop the disk into the player, and we get an error or the disk keeps on skipping. Before I go through several methods to prevent and fix your current disk errors, I'll first go through the anatomy of the actual blu ray disk. It has several different layers, there is the hard outer coating layer which helps to prevent any scratches and dirt harming the memory layer. An interesting fact is that when the blu ray disks were first developed, they didn't have this hard layer so they had to store the disks in big cartridges, making the overall size very big. Behind this hard layer is the actual memory layer, which has a lot of tiny little groves containing the information stored on your disk, for example it could be audio information for a film. The hard coating layer tries to prevent any damage to this layer, however due to the fragility of the disk it is very hard not to damage the memory layer unless you look after and repair your disks.
How to look after your disks:
It is recommended that you ALWAYS put your disk away in it's case after use. Leaving your disk around the place is just a hazard for errors. This should be common sense to many people, but you still see people leaving their disks around the place. You should invest in a specialist disk cloth (only about £3), and wipe the disk clean with a little bit of water every so often to prevent any damage to the disk. Also make sure when you use the disk, only pick the disk up by it's edges using your fingers and NEVER touch the sensitive blue underside of your disk.
How to repair your blu ray disks:
If you have left your disks around and/or neglected them then you will start to see disk read errors on your blu ray player. What you must do now is clean the scratches, otherwise your disk is rendered totally useless. One method is to buy a disk cleaning device, which allows you to effectively polish dirt and scratches out of your damaged disk. Another way is to grab an old but clean cotton rag and wipe from the inside of the disk outwards with a little bit of water and/or soap/alcohol. Make sure if you use any soap/alcohol/cleaner that you wipe it off and let it dry properly before you try and play the disk again!
